反译，即从反面着笔进行翻译。也就是说，翻译时突破原文的形式，采用变换语气的办法处理词句，把肯定的译成否定的或把否定的译成肯定的。如：difficult （困难）一词可译成“不易”，词组lose no time （不失时机）可译成“抓紧时机”。翻译时适当地采用“反译”可以使译文合乎汉语规范或修辞要求，而不失原意，这是常用的翻译技巧之一。
1 肯定译否定
1. Worm gear drives are quiet, vibration free, and extremely compact.
蜗轮传动没有噪音，没有振动，而且非常紧凑。
（试比较：蜗轮传动是平静的，无振动的，而且是非常紧凑的。）
2. As rubber prevents electricity from Passing through it, it is used as insulating material.由于橡胶不导电，所以用作绝缘材料。
（试比较:由于橡胶防止电通过，所以用作绝缘材料。）
3．The influence of temperature on the conductivity of metal is slight.
温度对金属的导电性影响不大.(不译作“是轻微的”)
4. In the old society,“Pingju” players seldom made enough to live on, and as most were saddled with big families their life was hard.
在旧社会，我们评剧演员常常挣钱不够吃饭，艺人们大都是拉家带口，生活困难。

2 否定译肯定
英语在表达否定概念时与汉语有所不同，所以英语的否定句不一定非译作汉语的否定句。翻译时，如能掌握这一特点，采用反译，有助于行文的流畅和自然。
1. Ice is not as dense as water and it therefore floats.
冰的密度比水小，因此能浮在水面上。
（试比较：冰不如水密，密谋因此它能浮在水面。）
2. If houses are at rest relative to the earth’s surface, the earth itself is not motionless.
如果房子对地球表面来说是静止的话，那么地球本身是在无能运动的。
（不译作“不是不动的”）
3. Metals do not melt until heated to a definite temperature.
金属要加热到一定温度才会熔化。
（不译作“直到…以前不会熔化”
4. The charging of a condenser from a battery is not unlike the filling of a tank from reservoir.
